Fiskardo
The picturesque small fishing village of Fiskardo in the northern part of Kefalonia is often referred to as "the most beautiful village in Greece." Unlike the rest of the island, whose buildings were largely destroyed by the earthquake of 1953, Fiskardo retains much of its authentic 18th-century architecture. Thanks to its natural harbor, it is also a paradise for sailors, filled with luxurious yachts and fine restaurants and bars. With rows of Venetian houses in sugary shades of pink, green, lilac, orange, and red, Fiskardo truly paints a postcard-perfect picture. The sight of elegant couples and sailors discussing which taverna serves the freshest seafood is extremely common. A quiet village until the 1960s, when it was "discovered" by a handful of hippies, Fiskardo is an idyllic destination to spend relaxed, carefree moments, far from the crowds of tourists.
Melissani Cave
The abyssal cave lake of Melissani is located 2 kilometers northwest of Sami in Kefalonia. The natural entrance of the cave is a vertical opening measuring 40 x 50 meters, created by the collapse of a section of the roof. An artificial entrance with steps and a long underground passage allows visitors to access the cave. The lake is situated 20 meters below the surface of the ground, and the depth of its waters ranges from 10 to 30 meters. Stalactites with unusual shapes decorate most of the cave. According to George A., the waters of Melissani flow into Agia Effimia.
